How to Think Positively


Many people want to think more positively but they feel like they can’t. Sometimes they don’t think optimism is a part of their make up, other times they see too many things wrong with the world, or finally they may think being positive is a load of crap for delusional people.

Let’s break each of these down and see where it leads us.

If you don’t see optimism as a part of who you are, then that is okay. It might not be. But that doesn’t mean it has to stay that way. It’s just as easy to be optimistic as it is to be pessimistic. The only thing that changes is your view, and your determination to change it.

Think about your neck turning. If you are looking left, you might see your neighbors fighting and tearing up their yard. But if you turn your head right, you might see a beautiful sun shine, pretty flowers, and children playing happily. It’s all in perspective and focus – that is my point.

In order to adjust to a perspective that benefits you, you have to narrow your focus down to you. What’s going on in your life? What is going well? What are you thankful for? What would you like to change? What steps can you take in order to implement those changes?

Once you focus on bettering yourself and covering yourself in gratitude, you really don’t have time to worry about your neighbors fighting and tearing up their yard.

That doesn’t mean you become insensitive towards what is going on in the world – far from it. Being empathetic is a part of being human – and some people feel that a lot more than others. But if you cannot help the world if you are not your best self. You can’t really help anyone until you have taken care of yourself. That’s why they always say on airplane safety demonstration to put your own mask on first.

Now for the big one – fakeness. There is some “positivity” going around that is positively inauthentic; but that doesn’t mean that adopting a positive life view makes you a fake person. You can tell the real from the fake when life comes knocking. The real is warm and caring, whereas the fake positivity is bitter and nasty – there is no love, no compassion, just a matter-of-fact attitude about how people cause their own problems and if they would just choose to be happy then they could be.

So what can you do to adjust the levels of positivity in your life?

  • Focus on gratitude. Gratitude is not just a thought, it’s a feeling. It’s not the superficial “please and thank you” either. It’s truly being thankful for what is before you. It’s allowing your body to fill with thankfulness for whatever you have – even down to the very breath you are taking. When you focus on gratitude, you completely shift the energy you are immersed in.


  • Toss negative people out of your life. Sorry, they have to go. You can’t stay in a positive vibration if you are surrounded by negative people. In the rare situation when it truly is out of your hands, then you have to learn how to ignore them. You don’t react, you don’t get upset, you just bring your mind to a neutral state.


  • Surround yourself with positive people. Fill that gap with loving and positive people, people who inspire you, people who give off good energy. If you can’t find any, then you need to become that energy and you will attract them. In the meantime, listen to uplifting seminars and speeches. I listen to these sort of pep talks daily. In fact, listening to the same lecture for a month is how I initially changed my mindset to a more uplifting one.

  1. This is a really helpful blog post. Sometimes it can be very difficult to just toss negative people out of our lives though. Do you have any suggestions for how to cut the ropes easier?

    • That’s a great question.

      The answer to is to cut the cord of fear.

      1) Is it required to subject yourself to this person?
      2) Why?
      2) What will happen if you let go?

      Number 3 is the key. Most people say loyalty is why they can’t let go. I say, you aren’t loyal to anyone if you aren’t loyal to yourself. It is not required to be anyones emotional punching bag- that does not make you a good friend or family member.

      Letting go doesn’t have to be this big, emotional filled rant. Just…let go. Stop contacting them. Ignore their contact. Slowly fade away without letting your emotions get in the way. You don’t have to explain anything, and in fact explaining will only rope you in further.

  2. Yes! Definitely toss out the negative people and surround yourself with positive personalities. Toxicity and negativity is sooo easy to spread, so get away from it!

  3. I think for me it’s making the conscious decision to choose to think more positively. I don’t know how else to explain it, but once I committed to that, things started to change. 🙂

    I think that positivity is a choice that you make every day. You choose to put on positivity, even when the world around you literally or figuratively is crashing down.

    Your points are spot on about this.

    Start with gratitude, kick out the negative and replace with the positive. Positivity is also a skill or even a mental muscle, you get better the more you do it.

    In my own writing, over on my blog, I talk about how we need to get a Champion Mindset. One that doesn’t quit, or let negativity stop you.

    For me, the best response that I can give to negativity is to just keep going no matter how bleak or difficult things can seem. Every battle is first won in the mind. So mastering your mind, holding your negative thoughts hostage and teaching yourself to let the positive thoughts in.

  6. I like the ideas you gave to help us be more positive. I’ve found that I have to make a habit of replacing negative thoughts with positive ones right away. Otherwise, I dwell on them and it can really bring me down and leave me in a funk.

  11. It seems like everyone is toxic these days but maybe I’m just a sensitive soul. I agree though, thinking positively can be hard,changing the way you think IS hard but taking that jump and going for it makes your life better.

    • Toxicity is spreading rapidly, but we just have to make the choice to jump right out of it. I’m a sensitive soul too….keep that sensitivity because it will serve you well.

  12. I really like the fact that we can choose what we are focusing on. It’s easy to focus on the negative and a bit harder to look at the bright side, but I always try to work a bit harder and focus on the positive. Great post!
